As we age, many people realize they may not need as much space and begin to consider downsizing to a space more manageable. Going through your home and your belongings can be overwhelming, and at times, a bit emotional. Here are a couple of tips to help make this transition easier.

Start planning early. Downsizing is a big step in any family, and not one you want to rush. Try starting with one room a day. Sorting through one room at a time gives you plenty of time to think about what is important to you and your family and decide what you can live without.

Create categories. It will be hard to decide between "keep" and "toss." Allow yourself to make a "maybe" pile of items that you can set aside and return to when you're near the end of your process. Also include a "sell" pile of items you think may make some money in a garage sale or online listing.

Include the family. Not only will this help with the physical portion of moving, but they can also help you make some decisions. This is a great way to spend time with your family and share memories together. They may also need things you don't anymore, like furniture, books, and toys.

At Prestige Senior Living at Huntington Terrace, we are very familiar with the process of downsizing and transitioning into senior living. If you are considering downsizing or want to learn more about our residential options, give us a call at (503)465-1404.
