With the Covid-19 outbreak, most of us have heard of stunning acts of kindness, helpfulness, and service to others. It can give us all relief to know that human beings have an innate goodness and caring nature for others in trying times like these.
I would like to begin writing this column to give some hope and facts that might help us all to get through these times with a bit less stress. First, I am a dentist in a private practice. I have a long-established practice and employees that are as good as it gets. Even though we are stressed, as all health care services are, we are still treating true emergencies. These emergencies include severe pain, uncontrolled bleeding, severe infections and trauma to the mouth and teeth. If for some reason a part of a tooth fractures and there is no pain, it will be fine to wait for a while. I have a professional answering service to accept calls in our absence because I dislike answering machines. You will always get a live, caring person to take your calls.
On health in general, look up, read, and practice CDC guidelines on ways to prevent Covid-19. Wash your hands for 20-30 seconds with lots of soap, get plenty of sleep to boost immunity, eat well, stay away from others, take a walk and think of how good it will feel when this is over. Us docs are only part of the cure...you are the other part. Be smart and be safe!
