This article is a continuation of last month's article about today's vehicles really being maintenance free. Engine oil and transmission fluid are the fluids for the 2 most important and most expensive components of your vehicle, the engine and transmission. The simple oil change is one of the best things you can do for your vehicle. Keeping the engine oil clean helps maintain and improve your vehicles value, longevity, safety and reliability. Engine oil is just one of the many fluids in your vehicle.

The automotive industry standard for replacing transmission fluid is every 30,000 miles.

Transmission specialists who spend 100% of their time repairing and overhauling failed transmissions will say closer to every 20,000 miles. Transmission fluid is full of detergent and like oil is designed to clean, cool and lubricate. Dirty fluid contains suspended particulate that is abrasive and accelerates transmission wear.

Coolant keeps the engine cool, providing a higher boiling point and a lower freezing point. It lubricates the water pump and reduces corrosion in the coolant passages. In our climate it should have a freeze protection level of – 32F. Coolant's pH is between alkaline and acid, if it ages and becomes acidic it can do damage, eating away at hoses, gaskets and even metal over time. Keeping coolant changed every 2 years or 30,000 miles will keep it clean and provide proper protection at the proper pH.

In out next article we will discuss if maintenance free vehicles really exist. Happy Motoring!
