MORE STORIES

We may not all agree on who to vote for but everyone seems to agree we need more and better jobs in this country. I spoke to a local accountant this week and she stated that many of her clients are struggling with keeping their employees - employed! As business owners we all know our most valuable resource is our people.

So how can we help keep more of our neighbors out of the unemployment line? By "Shopping Local" of course. When we have the choice, doing business with LOCALLY OWNED companies helps put the maximum dollars back into circulation in our community (nearly twice as much if they are locally owned)….for every million dollars spent locally economists estimate it creates around 23 jobs.

Here is my local list for this past week and I would love to hear from you about some businesses that you would like to lift up (email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.)! There is always a reason to go to Hope's Bakery, if you haven't been please give them a try! Made my first visit to Lakeside Gardens this week-what a treasure this facility is to our community. Bought a gift certificate for a friend at Second Nature Pet Supply, it even made me want to get a dog just so I could shop there on a regular basis. The Mexican Food Cart at White's Meats (sorry I do not know the name but they serve a great breakfast burrito). The Discounts Plus Store in downtown Gresham has many items that are 30% less than elsewhere. And yes, many of these places do not have lots of employees but they hire plumbers, gardeners, and electricians and that makes for a better community for us all.

Other ways to help: Give a local business a great review online and encourage the local School Districts and Community Colleges to engage in more vocational and technical training programs. Jobs are available but many graduates lack the skills for these family wage jobs. We will all benefit if good jobs are available locally! And that, I'm sure, we can ALL agree on!
