Pay it FASHION FORWARD at Glass Butterfly
Two striking models combed the racks earlier this week at The Glass Butterfly in downtown Gresham, selecting the outfits they'll show off in the "Puttin' on the Ritz" benefit fashion show and luncheon.
Funds raised through the show held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 4, will benefit the Gresham Senior Center, 600 N.E. Eighth St., which gives older adults an engaging place to go and a way to stay involved and active in their community.
"People always have a good time" at the soiree, said Bernie Walter, the volunteer coordinating the annual event, which also will include an auction, a drawing for a quilt and music from a local string quartet.
Under the watchful eye of the Glass Butterfly's Dawn Wallander, models Shirley Moller and Helen Shaull select outfits and try them on, choosing looks that appeal to a broad range of tastes.
"Its a fundraiser. The center needs that help," said Shaull, 75, who strutted the runway at last year's event. "It also brings diversified people into the center that wouldn't normally go there."
The Gresham Senior Center is a sociable, safe place for seniors to gather that offers multiple classes and activities including line dancing, cribbage and bingo, trips to casinos and other outings. Moller and Shaull are big fans of the Tai Chi classes. Seniors also can make appointments for foot care and other health-related activities.
The fundraiser "gives people a chance to see the fashions from the stores. They say 'I didn't know Glass Butterfly has that or DressBarn has that,'" Shaull said.
In addition to The Glass Butterfly, the models will don fashions from shops including the locally owned Chase Me Again, and Roz & Ali (former DressBarn). Wallander said employees at the store at 29 W. Powell Blvd., a fixture in Gresham since 1971, like to participate in the event to support the community.
After being asked multiple times to take part, Moller, 81, finally gave in to the modeling request. Although this will be her first time modeling for the Gresham Senior Center benefit, she modeled a swimsuit on the "AM Northwest" TV program when she was 30 years old.
"I have grown to love the senior center," she said. "This is a give back. I have more time to give back now."
Tickets for "Puttin' on the Ritz" cost $10 and are available at the center and at the door.
