Crime play opens Thursday in Troutdale

Corbett Children’s Theater is presenting “No Crime Like the Present” at 7 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, April 3, 4 and 5, and 1 p.m. Saturday, April 5, at The Chapel in Troutdale.

Cassandra Dumont was on her way to the top and she was willing to step on a few toes to get there.

As co-anchor of the “Six O'clock News” at television station KDOA, Dumont had made enough enemies to fill a phone book.

So it was no big surprise when somebody decided to cancel her ticket. Everybody who knew her had a motive.

Tickets are $9 for students and seniors and $11 for adults. The Chapel is at 37132 S.E. Stark St.

Casillas selected for regional women’s award

Soroptimist International of Gresham recently announced Sandra Casillas — its first-place Women’s Opportunity Award winner in March — was selected for a $3,000 regional award.

She placed second out of 80 applicants.

Casillas was once a teenage mother who was involved in a gang, abused substances and endured domestic violence. She overcame these obstacles to care for her four children, enroll at the University of Phoenix in a business program and work two jobs — one full time as an operations manager for Pathfinders of Oregon and one part-time in retail.

She also cares for husband, who suffers from epilepsy. Casillas recently became a U.S. citizen and was approved to build a home for her family through Habitat for Humanity.
