Heather Bailey named principal of Butler Creek
Heather Bailey was named principal of Butler Creek Elementary School in the Centennial School District for the upcoming school year.
Bailey has been principal of Russell Elementary School in the Parkrose School District since 2012. Prior to that she taught kindergarten, fourth and fifth grade in the district.
Bailey has been credited with a dramatic turnaround of Russell. When she took over six years ago, Russell was among the worst-performing schools on standardized tests in the state.
Bailey and her staff exploited the extra help given to such low-performing schools and improved test performance, especially in math.
In the 2011-12 school year more than half the students were not doing math at grade level. Now only about one-third are not hitting the mark.
"Everybody has been exceptionally welcoming," Bailey said at a Centennial school board meeting when she was introduced.
"I live in East County. I grew up in East County," she said. Bailey attended Parkrose schools and graduated from Parkrose High School. She played softball, was a member of the band, the school choir The Debonaires, and a member of the Parkrose Rose Festival Court.
The mother of two said in a biography that she always wanted to be a teacher. She earned a degree in elementary education from Concordia University, Portland. She also earned a master's degree in school administration from Concordia University in Portland.
In her off time, Bailey spends time camping and skiing with her family. She also loves to read.
Bailey replaces Andrea Sande, who is leaving the district to work as a consultant. Butler Creek is at 2879 S.W. Butler Road, Gresham.
