Jeffrey Cerveny has been named principal of Patrick Lynch Elementary School and will be returning to the Centennial School District from a district in California.

Cerveny, 32, is a program specialist for Desert Sands Unified School District in La Quinta, Calif.

Before accepting the position in La Quinta, Cerveny spent three years in the Centennial district as a learning specialist at Rosemary Anderson High School East.

Prior to that, he spent five years as a teacher, education specialist and head of the special education department in the Pasadena Unified School District in California.

"I'm really excited to rejoin the Centennial School District. It's a great district and this is a great school," Cerveny said.

Cerveny, who will start his new job July 1, replaces interim principal Stevie Blakely, who came out of retirement to lead the school temporarily.

Cerveny earned an undergraduate degree in psychology and German, a Masters in Educational Policy and Leadership and his administrative licensure, from the University of Oregon. He received a certificate in education equity from the University of Portland.

He began his career in the nonprofit Teach for America program in Pasadena. Teach for America recruits graduates from top universities to teach in low-income schools.

When he arrives at Patrick Lynch, 1546 S.E. 169th Place, this summer, Cerveny said, "It's important to make sure I'm connecting with the staff and integrating myself into the community."

He wants "to work together (with staff) in that cycle of continued improvement ... to meet students' needs."

Cerveny attended Centennial schools as a child, graduating from Centennial High School. He said it's been a goal to get back to East Multnomah County and working in the district.
