CONTRIBUTED PHOTO: MULTNOMAH COUNTY SHERIFF - Damascus MenefeeA man arrested Monday afternoon under suspicion of breaking into an apartment and sexually assaulting a teenager in the home was known to the people in the home, court documents revealed.

Damascus Menefee, 39, was arrested on accusations of assault, strangulation, rape, burglary, trespassing, interfering with a police officer making a report and a parole violation for a previous robbery conviction.

Menefee is being held in the Multnomah County jail on $570,000 bail.

At about 3 p.m. Monday, Sept. 10, Portland Police Bureau East Precinct officers responded to a call that an "unwanted male" was inside an apartment and refused to leave, police documents filed with the court show.

The woman who called told officers her 18 year-old daughter was still inside the home at The Rosewood Apartments, 16031 S.E Stark St., the documents said.

The woman said the man had threatened rape and subsequently locked the doors to the apartment. Officers heard screaming and a commotion as the man allegedly broke down the door.

Court documents said officers found a man inside wearing nothing but underwear. They also found a woman in a bedroom "crying and in apparent pain." She said Mr. Menefee hit her multiple times in the face, choked her and threatened to kill her, the documents said.

Officers took the suspect into custody without incident.

At the time of the incident, the family was in the process of moving. About two hours prior to the incident, the man, who the mother knows as "Duke," came into the apartment uninvited and refused multiple requests to leave.

Menefee has been charged with crimes at least 10 times, dating back to 1995.

Menefee's court appointed attorneys did not return a call for comment on his case.

Menefee's next court appearance is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 19.
