The one-day Gresham Police Citizen's Academy will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, at East Hill Church in downtown Gresham, 701 N. Main Ave. Attendees can just show up, there is no need to register. Those who go need to have no significant criminal history and be 16 and older — under 18 needs to be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

In the past, this program was extended across multiple weekends, but this time it has been shortened to better allow attendance.

The academy will cover all sorts of topics, including traffic stops, K9 handling, crime scene investigation, special weapons and tactics (SWAT) and gangs. Those who attend will get the opportunity to meet officers from different specialty assignments.

The idea behind the day is to provide real world experience and training to members of the community. The goal is to help people understand the complex and challenging work of law enforcement while having fun.
