The Gresham Police Department is accepting applications for its Police Cadet program until 5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 15.

Youths in the community are invited to apply to a Gresham program that will have them go on police ride-alongs, conduct traffic patrols and learn about crime prevention.

The Gresham Police Department is accepting applications for its Police Cadet program until 5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 15. Assigned to the department's operations division, the cadet volunteers work with sworn officers to provide security at community events and may assist with article searches at crime scenes. Additional opportunities include training with SWAT and the department's K9 units.

Cadets compete in the annual Oregon Law Enforcement Challenge, participate in firearms competitions and scenario-based events that include active shooters, building searches, precision driving and crime scene investigation.

Applicants must be between 15 and 20 years of age, live in Gresham or the surrounding area, pass a criminal background check, have a good driving record (if applicable, and have a GPA of 2.5 or better if still attending school). All people selected as members of the cadet unit are required to attend and graduate a department-hosted academy.
