Gresham's sustainable businesses came together for a celebration of all the work that has been done across the community this past year.
The Gresham Green Business program hosted the coffee hour and awards event Wednesday morning, Nov. 28, at the Rockwood Public Safety Facility, 675 N.E. 181st Ave.
"Thank you everyone for being here and for the work you have done," said Gregg Hayward, waste reduction specialist with the city.
Migration Brewing, 18188 N.E. Wilkes Road, and Gresham's Schmizza Public House, 850 N.W. Eastman Parkway, were both given green awards for the work they've done in reducing their carbon footprints. Both have been receptive to suggestions made by the experts from the city on how to continue good practices, and Tyson Bafford, the owner of Schmizza, wants to spread that information to 27 franchises in the Portland region.
"We are trying to be the flagship store for all of (Schmizza)," Bafford said. "We can motivate them to be more sustainable."
Willie Chambers, with POIC and Rosemary Anderson High School, was named the 2018 Food Sustainability Advocate; Centennial School District received the 2018 Green Team of the Year; and Amber DePerro was named Rookie of the Year for her work at Delta AV.
In 2018, the city of Gresham and the business community took important steps toward bringing more sustainability into the community. The accomplishments included:
n Six new and recertified Green Businesses
n 202 coffee hour attendees, representing 67 businesses
n More than 350 green resources delivered
n 62 composters across the city
