Man arrested in Gresham arraigned on murder indictment
The Multnomah County District Attorney has arraigned a 27-year-old man on Monday, Dec. 3 on a murder indictment after he was arrested early September in Gresham.
Portland Police Bureau officers began an investigation on July 1 into the killing of Billy Mayfield, 37, after reports of gunfire on July 1 in the 12200 block of Southeast Harold Street. Police found Mayfield suffering from a gunshot wound, and he died while being transported to the hospital.
The suspect of the shooting was Daniel Troy Harwood, who was arrested on Sept. 3 by the Gresham Police Department near the intersection of Northeast Burnside Street and North Main Avenue on an unrelated matter.
Harwood was booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center on allegations of being a felon in possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of a firearm and unlawful possession of methamphetamine. While being held, and based on evidence from Portland Police detectives, a grand jury was convened to start reviewing evidence associated with the death of Mayfield.
The indictment alleges that Harwood unlawfully and intentionally caused the death of Mayfield using a handgun. The grand jury heard from a total of eight witnesses about the incident.
Mayfield's next court date is on Jan. 14.
