Grant allows Habitat to purchase new donation truck
Thanks to a Metro regional government grant aimed at reducing waste, Habitat for Humanity's ReStores are better able to collect and sell reusable goods before they end up in the landfill.
In December, it was announced that nearly $2.5 million would be awarded to businesses and nonprofit organizations through Metro's three-year Investment and Innovation grant program. Habitat for Humanity is getting a $50,000 chunk of the grant for increasing the waste prevention capacity of its ReStores, one of which is located in Rockwood.
"With our grant, we will be purchasing a new box truck, which will allow us to expand our service area for donation pick-ups and further our commitment to reduce waste through reuse and recycling," said Julie Carter, vice president of retail operations for Habitat.
The ReStores will be able to collect more items, and because every donation and sale funds Habitat homes, there will be more housing availability for hardworking, low-income families.
"We will also be strengthening our local effort to foster economic opportunities for people who have historically been left out of the garbage and recycling system — particularly communities of color," Carter said.
The ReStores are donation-based home improvement outlets selling new and used building materials, appliances, furniture and other goods. In the past year, the four regional stores diverted more than 7,484 tons of materials away from landfills and raised more than $624,000.
