Gresham City Council paved a way forward during its meeting Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 12, for the Pleasant Valley Transportation System Plan, which will guide future construction and roadways within the booming community.
The city will follow what it dubbed Alternative 1 — which supports improvements along Southeast Jenne Road and widens Southeast 172nd Avenue and extends it to Southeast Giese Road.
That alternative would be funded mainly through growth within Pleasant Valley and the triggering of System Development Charges.
"Alternative 1 has the least cost of any option and better connects to the future town center," said Katherine Kelly, comprehensive planning manager with Gresham.
The other popular choice was dubbed Alternative 3B, which would have created a four-way intersection between Jenne and Giese, and widen Southeast Foster Road. This choice was supported by a Community Advisory Committee who gave input to city staff throughout the process.
Though the other choice was ultimately promoted by city council, Gresham vowed to look into improving conditions along Foster, as it has been an issue for the people living in the area.
"There is still a strong sense in the community to look at Foster," Kelly said.
The need for a transportation plan in Pleasant Valley is critical, as the community will eventually have around 12,000 residents and 5,000 jobs, including a vibrant town center.
"Over the last 20 years there has been a lot of city engagement with this process," said Gresham Mayor Shane Bemis. "I'm glad to see things moving forward."
The next steps for city staff is to create a phasing and implementation plan for Alternative 1, which they expect to be completed by the fall.
