OnPoint Community Credit Union has opened nominations for their 10th annual OnPoint Prize for Excellence in Education.
One teacher in grades kindergarten-eight and one in grades nine-12 will be named Educators of the Year. OnPoint will pay their mortgages for one full year and donate $2,500 to their schools.
There also will also be two finalists that will each receive a $5,000 cash award and $1,500 for their schools. Six additional teachers will be named to the Circle of Excellence and will each receive a $1,500 cash award and $1,000 for their schools.
Last year, two local teachers won the top prizes. Lucas Houck, at Corbett Middle School, was named K-8 Educator of the Year and Janine Kirstein, choral music teacher at Gresham High School won in the high school category.
Nomination forms and rules are available at onpointprize.com. Nominations are due by 5:30 p.m. Monday, April 8.
Kiddos create anime
Simpson's artist and comic creator Carlos Nieto III will teach elementary school kids how to create an anime character in a free workshop from 4-5:30 p.m. Saturday, March 9, at the Gresham Library, 385 NW. Miller Ave.
Nieto has created "Anime Your Way," a step-by-step drawing program that teaches the participant how to create and adjust an anime character from scratch, no matter their drawing level.
