The 11-year-old boy slipped on a patch of ice and fell approximately 100 feet.

A child was hurt after slipping and falling off the Multnomah Falls trail on Friday, March 15.

Witnesses estimated the boy fell about 100 feet.

He fell from a paved portion of the train where ice had hardened on the path, according to a KOIN 6 news report (KOIN 6 is an Outlook media partner).

The US Forest Service said a bystander helped rescue the boy, who is about 11 years old, from the wooded area where he landed. He walked out with his parents and was conscious and talking when they returned to the lodge.

Officials said the family didn't appear to have proper footwear for icy conditions. They tried to walk around the ice but got too close to the edge of the pavement, which is likely how the child slipped.

The Forest Service put up a sign after the child fell to warn others about the ice.
