Crews have rescued hikers from slides caused by heavy spring rains at Multnomah Falls.

A rockfall is occurring between Benson Bridge and the first switchback trail at Multnomah Falls. Forest Service staff are escorting hikers out with hard hats, and have found approximately 10 hikers so far, with a few more waiting above the active rockfall area.

The U.S. Forest Service crews are completing a sweep of the trail to clear it of people, according Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area - U.S. Forest Service Facebook page. Once the trail is clear, the entire Wahkeena-Multnomah loop will be closed until further notice.

When the rain abates, the forest service will send experts out to reassess the situation.

The short hike up to Benson Bridge remains open.
