The money raised at the event supports students with scholarships, classroom equipment and more

Hood Community College Foundation is adding a fun twist to its big fundraiser this year. Dress up, by all means, but spare your tootsies by wearing sneakers instead of those strappy sandals or stiff wingtips.

The "Sneaker Ball" will be held from 5-9 p.m. Saturday, April 27. A reception and silent auction start at 5 p.m., with dinner and the program beginning at 6 p.m. Wear your coolest kicks and cocktail attire. The fun happens at the Yoshida Event Center, Mt. Hood Community College, 26000 S.E. Stark St.

Funds generated by the event are used for scholarships and to support all students at MHCC in a variety of ways, including with classroom equipment.

The MHCC Foundation is hoping to surpass last year's record of $312,000 raised.

"The Foundation auction has been the key to providing financial support to students through much needed scholarships," said Al Sigala, the foundation's executive director.

"It's through the generous support we receive from our community and local businesses who contribute to its success that these students are able to accomplish their educational goals," he added.

This year's Sneaker Ball will include plenty of enticing items up for bid during both the live and silent auctions. Live auction items include a white gold diamond necklace contributed by longtime auction supporter GoldArt Jewelers, a seven-day Holland America cruise, and vacation packages to Hawaii, Mexico, Cannon Beach and Orcas Island. Back by popular demand is the Board of Directors' Whiskey Library, a collection of whiskeys hand-selected by MHCC Foundation Board members.

KATU-TV weatherman Dave Salesky will emcee the festivities accompanied by auctioneer Brad Caldwell. Both of them are MHCC alumni.

Jacob Weston of Weston Dealerships leads the auction committee along with the Foundation's Fundraising Committee Chairman Ken Cornelison. Joining them on the committee are Tim Brunner, Debra Derr, Justin Hwang, Bill James, Loretta McGregor and Diane Noriega.

The event's "diamond" sponsor is Suburban Auto Group and "platinum" sponsors are Weston Kia and McDonald & Welte Roofing and Sheetmetal. "Gold" sponsors are Ferguson Wellman Capital Management, Boeing, Riverview Community Bank, USI and TKW.

Individual tickets for The Sneaker Ball are $100, and tables of 10 are available for $1,000. Sponsorship packages range from $1,500-$15,000.
