Celebrate kids and books
The Gresham Library is celebrating bilingual literature and kids this Saturday with a big party featuring games, free books and a cultural performance.
Día de los Niños y Día de los Libros, which is marked during the month of April by libraries across the country, is designed to emphasize the importance of literacy for all children from all backgrounds.
"Programs such as Día play a critical role in helping meet the needs of an increasingly diverse population, while also fueling understanding and acceptance," said the American Library Association on its web page.
Gresham's fete is from 2-4 p.m. Saturday, April 13, at the Gresham Library, 385 N.W. Miller Ave.
Every child will get a free book (while supplies last). There will be engaging crafts for kiddos, face painting, games and other fun activities.
From 3-4 p.m. Mexica Tiahui, an Aztec dance group, will perform in their colorful costumes. The group was founded in 1995 by Mexican and Chicano students from Oregon State University.
Día de los Niños y Día de los Libros is made possible in part by gifts to The Library Foundation, including a grant from the BNSF Railway Foundation. Community sponsors are Portland Parks & Recreation, Portland Children's Museum, OMSI and Saturday Academy.
