Audrey Hoellein, 26, was found dead in Vancouver Washingotn on July 17, 1994.

A Fairview resident suspected of murdering Audrey Hoellein in 1994 was arrested on Sunday, April 28.

Vancouver police used DNA and genetic genealogy testing to lead them to suspect 57-year-old Fairview resident Richard E. Knapp of the crime, said Vancouver Police Assistant Chief Mike Lester. COURTESY PHOTO - Vancouver Police Department have made an arrest in a 1994 murder case.

The 26-year-old victim was found dead in the 8000 block of E. Fourth Plain Blvd., Vancouver Wash. on July 17, 1994. Police stated she was raped and murdered.

DNA samples were collected at the scene, but they were not connected to anyone at the time, according to a KOIN 6 news report. KOIN 6 is an Outlook media partner.

In 2018, detectives sent DNA from the crime scene to Parabon NanoLabs, who use advanced testing to create genetic data profiles. The profile from the lab was connected to a public genealogy database.

It eventually led detectives to suspect Knapp. A Knapp family member supplied the DNA to the public database.

Officials conducted surveillance and used a discarded cigarette butt to collect Knapp's DNA and connect him to the crime.

Knapp will make his first court appearance in Clark County Court on Wednesday, May 1.

He is being extradited from Oregon, where he was arrested after a traffic stop.
