Local pickleball legend captures gold
A Damascus resident took home the gold medal during a summer pickleball tournament in Washington.
Team Selkirk's Enrique Ruiz, Damascus, won alongside his partner Joe Barkdoll in the Men's Doubles Open Division of the Mint Valley Summer Pickoff Tournament, which ran June 7-9 at the Mint Valley Racquet & Fitness Club in Longview.
Known as "El Condor," because of his amazing ability to switch hands and long wingspan, Ruiz is now a 6-time National Open Champion; a national gold medalist in Singles, Men's Doubles and Mixed Doubles competition; and a 3-time gold medalist in the prestigious Pickleball Tournament of Champions.
Pickleball, which combines elements of tennis, badminton and ping pong, is one of the fastest growing sports in the country. For more information on Team Selkirk ambassadors, visit www.selkirk.com.
