Pack 6 donated 70 pounds of produce to SnowCap Community Charities so far this year

A group of Troutdale Cub Scouts have been hard at work maintaining a vegetable garden where all the produce grown is donated to hungry families.

Troutdale Pack 6 Cub Scouts, which consists of about 15 boys and girls between the ages of 5-10 years old, take their duties as gardeners very seriously. Each week they plant, water and pick the pesticide-free produce that goes to fill SnowCap Community Charities' food pantry.

This year they have already donated more than 70 pounds of zucchini, cucumbers, eggplants, peppers, tomatoes and beans to SnowCap — and more is expected before the year is out.

The charitable effort is made possible thanks to support from other community groups. Troutdale Pack 6 receives donated vegetable starts from Bushes Nursery in Sandy, and the growing is done in Faith United Methodist Church's community garden. The scouts even sprouted many of their own seeds while learning about healthy eating and clean lifestyle habits.

Pack 6's goal is to engage youth in the outdoors, develop leadership and life skills, and be active in community service. They have other outreach projects, including church and school ground clean ups, tree planting for the Johnson Creek Watershed, and visiting local assisted living facilities. Last year Pack 6 collected hats, gloves, scarves, and hand made pillow and lap blanket sets for the senior residents.
