Man arrested for arson, kidnapping
A Gresham man was arrested after allegedly threatening his property manager with a gun and setting his apartment on fire.
Robert Houser, 62, was booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center around 3:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 6. He faces first-degree arson, two counts of first-degree kidnapping, two counts of coercion and unlawful use of a weapon.
Gresham Police officers responded at 2:55 p.m. to Hogan Woods Apartments, 1645 N.E. 20th St., on reports that a man, later identified as Houser, had entered the manager's office with a gun. Allegedly he was upset about the cost of rent.
The office was occupied by employees, police said, who were able to safely get away. Gresham officers said Houser then fled to his apartment in the complex, and soon smoke could be seen coming out of the unit.
Gresham Police evacuated the building and took Houser into custody. Gresham Fire & Emergency Services extinguished the fire.
Anyone with additional information about the incident is asked to call 503-618-2719.
