MAX Blue Line upgrades to disrupt service
A series of upgrades along the eastern-most portion of TriMet's Blue Line will lead to a smoother ride for passengers after two weeks of disrupted service.
Crews will spend two weeks from Sunday, Sept. 22, to Saturday, Oct. 5, completing work along one of the oldest sections of the MAX line — 2 miles from the Rockwood/East 188th Avenue Station to the Cleveland Avenue Station. TriMet cautions travelers should allow up to 15 extra minutes for trips through the work area.
The planned improvements will take place nine feet underground to 19 feet in the air. Upgrades to trail crossings will make the MAX ride smoother, while also creating a more even surface for drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians. Crews will repair the track bed, replace rail ties and improve the roadway where it meets the rails by filling in asphalt gaps. They also will replace wooden railroad ties, installed in the 1980s, with more durable options.
Underground crews will dig trenches to lay cables for a new signal system building that is under construction. They will also replace the overhead wire that powers westbound trains between the Gresham Central Transit Center and Civic Drive Station.
TriMet said the work will disrupt service to the five easternmost stations on the Blue Line. Ruby Junction/East 197th Avenue; Civic Drive; Gresham City Hall; Gresham Central Transit Center; and Cleveland Avenue stations will all be closed during the work at the end of the month into October. Travelers will have to rely on shuttle buses running between the stops near the closed stations. TriMet said the buses will run on the MAX Blue Line schedules for most of the service day.
From Sept. 22 to Oct. 5, seven intersections will be closed or have lanes reduced for two-day stretches:
-- Main Avenue will be closed between Division and Eighth Street
-- Hood Avenue will be closed between 10th Drive and Seventh Street
-- Cleveland Avenue will be closed between Eighth Street and Sixth Street
-- Eastman Parkway will be closed between Burnside Street and Division Street
-- Roberts Avenue will be closed between 10th Drive and Fifth Street
-- Kelly Avenue will be closed between Eighth Street and Seventh Street
-- Birdsdale Avenue will have one land closed with flaggers directed traffic
No other part of the MAX transit system will be affected by the work.
