Local veteran passes on prize to family in need
A local veteran decided to pass along his good fortune to families of deployed National Guard members.
Last spring, Gresham Ford donated a $500 gift certificate to the Gresham United VFW Post 180 for tires and/or service performed at the dealership's Quick Lane Service Center. The VFW held a drawing on Veterans Day, Monday, Nov. 11, and the grand prize winner was post member Tom Bennett.
Bennett decided to donate the gift certificate to the families of deployed members of the Gresham Army National Guard Unit 162nd Infantry. Bennett, a Navy veteran, could not think of a better use for the prize.
First Sgt. Tyler Brown, with the 162nd Infantry, said the donation could not have been more timely, as a struggling local family has been in need of repairs on their car.
VFW Post 180, and its sponsoring partner Gresham Ford, are committed to helping veterans and the families of those deployed. Post 180 provides food boxes and covers unexpected expenses to families while their loved ones are serving.
"Having been in both the Guard and Reserves, I understand the difficulties families face on deployment," said Post Commander David Lowe. "A soldier cannot adequately preform their mission if they know there are problems at home. We, in the Veterans of Foreign Wars, want to take on the burden so the soldier can focus on the mission and return home safely."
Anyone who has service work done at Gresham Ford can mention Gresham United VFW Post 180 to have 10% of their repair bill donated to the post, up to $100.
