You may be wondering about the front page of today's newspaper.

This week, as part of our ongoing commitment to Save Community Journalism, every Pamplin Media Group newspaper is asking its readers to consider: "What if this newspaper did not exist?"

Steve BrownIn addition to a blank front page, the four-page wrap around today's regular edition of The Outlook also highlights testimonials from our staff about why they do their jobs, followed by comments from our readers about the value community news provides to them and their community.

Every day, Pamplin Media Group employees strive to create stronger communities by informing and engaging our readers with independent, trusted local news. But doing this has a cost.

Unfortunately, the days are gone when we could count on our advertising to completely sustain us. Google, Facebook and Amazon have not been kind to local media companies or many of the businesses that traditionally support us with their advertising.

That's why are asking you, our loyal readers, to help us. For a majority of the people reading this, you already are doing a lot. You value community news and we thank you for this.

We hope you continue to read and subscribe to The Outlook, which comes with access to our website. And if you are someone who values local news outside your immediate community, we also hope you will subscribe to all 25 Pamplin Media Group news websites through the Pamplin Digital All Access Pass.

We also ask that you encourage your friends and neighbors to subscribe. You already understand that local news helps to build stronger, more unified communities, and as such, you are a great ambassador for community journalism.

A regular subscription to this newspaper is less than $1 per week. And for less than $2 per week, you can continue to get The Outlook and unlimited access to every Pamplin Media Group newspaper website, where you will find an estimated 4,400 new stories every month. We think this is a reasonable request, considering that without ongoing support we will not be able to continue to serve each of our communities in the way that we have.

And if you happen to be a business owner, or know local businesses that advertise, please understand that advertising revenue still supports a majority of our work. And because our print newspapers and websites are still the most-read sources for local news in each of our communities, we are able to offer competitive advertising packages to help businesses dominate their local market. All we ask is that business owners give us the opportunity to meet with them to explain what we have to offer.

Your support, through subscriptions and advertising, gives us the ability to continue serving our communities with important local news in the way we have for decades — and in many cases, for more than a century.

We also know we can do more. Every day, we have to pass up opportunities to write about local people, local businesses and local sports teams. Our news is a living history of each of our communities and a way to bring common understanding to shared problems and successes. So please join us to help Save Community Journalism. When we all work together, we can accomplish amazing things.
