Police have identified a Gresham resident as the motorist who was killed in a crash on Interstate 205 on Saturday, Feb. 8 in Portland.
Yevgeniy L. Kovalenko, 25, was traveling southbound the I-205 southbound bridge across the Columbia River at Government Island around 5:30 a.m. when his car crashed into the back of a semi-truck.
In a fundraising appeal, Kovalenko's family wrote that he had two brothers and two sisters, and was the first-born child.
"Yevgeniy was a kind, loving, caring person who was always eager to help in any way he can," his family wrote. "He had high hopes and dreams for himself and the family."
First responders determined that Kovalenko, who was traveling alone, died at the scene.
Authorities say the truck driver remained at the crash site and cooperated with the investigation. No charges or citations were issued.
Police say speed is believed to be a "key contributing factor" in the crash.
This crash on the Glenn Jackson Bridge is the sixth fatal crash within Portland city limits in 2020, and the 8th crash investigated by the city's major crash team.
