Cheers for the cheerleaders

Barlow, Gresham and Centennial high school cheer squads distinguished themselves in the recent state cheerleading championships.

The Barlow Bruins cheerleaders placed fifth in the 6A class in the statewide contest which was held Saturday, Feb. 15, at Portland's Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

Gresham Gophers placed 11th in the super competitive 6A class.

Centennial Eagles competed in the large co-ed division and placed ninth.

In 6A overall, Newberg High School placed first and David Douglas High School was second.

Corbett Middle School closes area to students

Corbett School District closed Room One in its crumbling middle school building as it works on the purchase of a school site from the Reynolds School District. At the start of the school year, Corbett moved eighth graders into the high school building to keep middle school students out of the most dangerous parts of the old middle school building.

Corbett is buying the mothballed Natural Resources Academy, at 31600 E. Woodard Road, Troutdale, from Reynolds for $500,000. The Natural Resources Academy is about 2.5 miles west of Corbett's main campus on a 3.5 acre plot with a low-slung 14,158 square foot building and several outbuildings.
