Prepackaged boxes available at 4 p.m. on March 25, at the converted bus at Centennial High School

PMG PHOTO: TERESA CARSON - Food for Families will distribute food boxes on Wednesday, March 25, at Centennial High School, because of the strain put on families due to restrictions imposed during the novel cornavirus outbreak.

The Gresham-based Food for Families food pantry will offer a special distribution of food boxes on Wednesday, March 25.

With the outbreak of the novel coronavirus and the massive job layoffs that have resulted, the organizers said they wanted to provide help for struggling families.

"It's really important that we're there," said Shar Giard, a founder of the nonprofit Food for Families.

Distribution will begin at 4 p.m. at the pantry, a converted school bus parked at Centennial High School, 3505 S.E. 182d Ave., Gresham.

The group originally was not scheduled to have a distribution during spring break, but made an exception in the wake of the crisis.

Usually on the twice-monthly distribution days, people get a number and are allowed to go through the bus and "shop," picking out what they need. The March 25 distribution, however, will provide pre-packaged boxes with as much food as the pantry can provide.

Most of the food will be nonperishables such as rice, beans and pasta, but the group is hoping to include milk and other fresh items.

The special distribution will be drive-through or walk-up only and volunteers will maintain the recommended six-feet social-distance rule.

The normally scheduled distribution on Wednesday April 8, and April 22, will likely also feature pre-packed boxes.

"We're real concerned for our families," Giard said.
