PMG PHOTO: SHANNON O. WELLS - Troutdale General Store, one of downtown Troutdales oldest and most beloved restaurants and gift shops, sits quietly shuttered on a recent Wednesday morning. Like many businesses closed in an effort to slow the spread of coronavirus, the store affixed a friendly note to customers on its front door explaining the need to close and hope to reopen as soon as its safe to do so. Like many area restaurants and small businesses impacted by the coronavirus crisis, the Troutdale General Store in downtown Troutdale, and Sugarpine Drive-In by the Sandy River, now sit quiet and shuttered.

Both recently offered messages to customers.

A sign on the front doors of the Troutdale General Store reads: "After much consideration and with heavy hearts we have to announce that for the safety of our family, employees, and community we have decided to close until further notice. This decision does not come lightly but we want to keep everyone safe during this time. We already can't wait to be back as soon as possible and will continue to update everyone as much as we can."

In its most recent message to customers on Facebook, Sugarpine provides options to support the business:

"Hello friends! Due to the Stay at Home Order, we are no longer offering our Sugarpine Market pick up. But there are ways you can help if you're so inclined. We appreciate your support!

n Purchase Sugarpine Gift Cards for when we reopen. Twenty-five percent of these sales go to help feed our staff and their families.

n Make a donation if you are able.

n Purchase some Sugarpine Swag — hats, beanies, tees, totes, stickers — we've got some killer gear and now ship direct to your doorstep.

Thank you all for your support of our small business and all our staff who have worked so hard to bring Sugarpine to life these past 18 months. We will make it through this together."

Historic Columbia River Highway, was closed and — except for construction work on the nearby Troutdale Bridge over the Sandy River — eerily quiet on a recent Wednesday. A note to customers on its Facebook pages offers loyal customers options to support the business while its closed to encourage social distancing and slowing spread of the coronavirus.
