Verizon sets backpack giveaway
Verizon-Cellular Plus in Troutdale will give away backpacks filled with school supplies from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, July 25, while supplies last.
No purchase is necessary to receive a backpack, but a child must be present with an adult to claim the gift.
The store, at 3163 S.W. 257th Drive, is in the Albertson's shopping center. Employees will be wearing masks and social distancing will be followed.
"Although we are not sure what the school year will look like, we know there will be learning taking place and kids will need school supplies. We would like to help make it a little easier for families to afford these essential supplies so that students can start off the school year prepared and confident," said Cellular Plus President Adam Kimmet.
Corbett names principal
Michelle Dawkins, a teacher at Corbett Elementary School, has been named that school's principal. She replaces DeeDee Hanes, who resigned to take a job in Alaska.
The high school also has a new principal. Kathy Childress replaces Phil Pearson, who became the principal of Woodland High School in Woodland, Wash.
The district is also searching for a temporary superintendent to replace Randy Trani. He resigned to become the superintendent of the much larger Mantanuska-Sustina Borough School District in Palmer, Alaska, beginning Aug. 3. An interim superintendent will give the Corbett School Board time to find a permanent replacement.
