Erik Schmidt, director of community development and city services, will serve as interim city manager through the end of the year.

Gresham City Council has officially begun its search for the next permanent city manager — and the community can weigh in on what they would like to see in potential candidates.

The recruitment process is being helmed by Novak Consulting Group, which was hired by council last month. The first step is determining what key skills, leadership qualities, and experience are needed for the next city manager to be successful, as well as key priorities they will need to focus on.

Novak has created an online survey, available in English and Spanish, so the community can weigh in. Visit surveymonkey.com/r/GreshamORCityManagerCommunitySurvey for the English version. — The Spanish version is available at es.surveymonkey.com/r/EncuestradeAdministradorMunicipal.

All responses are due by Sunday, Oct. 11.

City Council will finalize the candidate profile in mid-October, and interviews are likely to take place in December.

The need for a new city manager occurred after longtime leader Erik Kvarsten unexpectedly retired during a series of high-profile departures among Gresham leadership. Erik Schmidt, director of community development and city services, will serve as interim city manager through the end of the year.
