Multnomah County Sheriff's deputies were making their way to the 7900 block of Southeast 282nd Avenue for a 911 hang-up call when they learned a vehicle had hit a pedestrian. Upon arriving they found Christopher Smith, 27, who was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The driver, Rolando Mariano-Gonzalez, 20 cooperated with the investigation, deputies said, and consented to a field sobriety test and blood draw. Investigators do not believe impairment was a factor, and no criminal charges have been made against Mariano-Gonzalez at this time.

Deputies learned Smith had been drinking at a local restaurant. Witnesses report he was wearing dark clothing and walking in and out of the roadway trying to flag down cars as they drove by before he was hit.
