Find your Christmas tree in the forest for $5
As the holiday season approaches, permits are available for those who wish to venture into the Mt. Hood National Forest for a Christmas tree.
When searching for a holiday tree, forest staff recommend bringing traction devices for vehicles and a shovel, extra food, drinking water, winter clothing, blankets, a flashlight and a first aid kit, along with a tool for cutting the tree and rope or cord to secure it to a vehicle.
Tree cutting is prohibited in areas closed because of the recent wildfires; along Highways 26, 35 and 216; in wilderness areas; in Camp Baldwin; in the Bull Run and Dalles watersheds; and any area closed to public entry.
Permits are $5 per tree, with a limit of five permits per household. They are available for purchase online at recreation.gov, as well as at Estacada Tackle Shop, 210 S.E. Highway 224; Sandy ACE Heritage Hardware, 39181 Pioneer Blvd.; Welches Thriftway, 68280 Highway 26; and Welches Mountain Building Supply, 67250 Highway 26.
