Every year, Country Financial encourages its employees to sponsor a community nonprofit group with a donation. Gresham's Josh Thorner, a veteran, decided to present his $1,000 check to the Gresham United Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 180 — an organization where he is a member.

"I wanted this donation to go where it would do the most good for our Gresham community," Thorner said. "When (Country Financial) added veterans service organizations to the list of eligible nonprofits, I knew where I wanted this check to go."

Thorner presented the check Monday, Dec. 21.

"This donation could not have come at a more opportune time," said Gresham VFW Commander David Lowe. "This holiday season has been a strain on our relief fund, so the donation will be used to continue our support of the veterans in our community."

The Gresham VFW has many holiday events to support veterans and their families. Post 180 has adopted "C" Company 2/162 Infantry — the Oregon Army National Guard unit stationed in Gresham.

"The unit identified several families that were experiencing financial difficulties this holiday season," said VFW Quartermaster Franklin West. "Many of these soldiers returned from an overseas deployment to find drastic changes — no jobs due to the pandemic and money is tight."

The VFW adopted those veteran families in need and had members donate toys and gifts for the children to open on Christmas. They also worked with Amen Ministries to provide Christmas dinners for those families, supplementing the food boxes with donations from the VFW members.

Thorner's donation will help the VFW continue those programs as well as provide other support for veterans heading into the new year.
