East County forms SAFER Council; Gresham plants trees; Stimulus payments are coming

A regional team has been created to address fire service across East Multnomah County.

The SAFER Council (Sustainable Affordable Funding for Emergency Services) consists of city representatives from Gresham, Fairview, Wood Village, Troutdale and a Multnomah Rural Protection District 10 board member.

The goals of the team are to determine the emergency response level for the regional area; perform a needs assessment for how to meet service level expectations; and to establish SAFER proposals for consideration by each city council and district board.

The group's inaugural meeting took place Wednesday evening, Jan. 13.

Gresham plants trees

The city of Gresham will be planting more trees in the Rockwood, Wilkes East and North Gresham neighborhoods, thanks to a new regional partnership and grant.

The city is working with the Multnomah County Office of Sustainability and Friends of Trees on a grant from East Multnomah Soil and Water Conservation District to survey, maintain and plant trees.

Through the end of February the Gresham Tree Team — comprised of county staff and interns — will be planting trees, surveying and measuring tree types, and performing routine tree maintenance in the public right-of-way. The crew has already planted more than 300 trees in Gresham since 2018.

Stimulus payments are coming

The U.S. Treasury has begun issuing the second round of stimulus payments — and people who didn't receive a direct deposit in early January should expect either a check from the IRS or an Economic Impact Payment debit card in the mail.

The card will come in an envelope with a return address of Money Network Cardholder Services, P.O. Box 247022, Omaha, NE, 68124. The card is not a scam. People may not be paid the same way they received their first stimulus payment.

Most individuals will receive $600 and $1,200 for married couples filing a joint return. There is also an additional $600 for each qualifying child.
