A Gresham couple were arrested for knowingly causing serious injury to two children by starvation and malnourishment, the Multnomah County District Attorney's office announced Tuesday, Jan. 19.
Mena Kamel, 33, and Marina Zaki, 28, have been charged with four counts of first-degree assault and 14 counts of first-degree criminal mistreatment in a case investigated by the Gresham Police Department and the Multnomah County District Attorney's Multidisciplinary Child Abuse Team.
Both victims were under the age of six.
According to court documents, the starvation, malnourishment and criminal mistreatment took place between Sept. 1, 2018, and June 27, 2020.
The investigation began on June 27, 2020, when one of the children suffered a critical injury that prompted law enforcement and medical teams to respond to a residence in the 16400 block of East Burnside Road.
