Man killed in Fairview fire
A man died during a two-alarm house fire Thursday morning, March 18, in Fairview after failing to escape the engulfed building alongside his wife.
Fire crews responded to the blaze at Northeast Interlachen Lane near Fairview Lake around 6:30 a.m. A Gresham police officer and off-duty Portland firefighter were the first to arrive on the scene, and attempted to rescue any occupants from the home. An adult woman was able to get out around 6:40 a.m., but her husband died in the home.
Neighbors describe the fire as reaching 50 feet into the air at one point, and when firefighters arrived the entire structure was engulfed in flames.
The Gresham Fire Department, Portland Fire and Rescue and the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office responded to the scene, with as many as eight fire engines arriving in Fairview. By late morning crews continued to extinguish hot spots.
Investigators are looking into the cause of the fire.
