Annual fun run raises $13,000 for Family of Friends Mentoring as runners take part in 5k, 10k and half-marathon

COURTESY PHOTO: CITY OF GRESHAM - Runners cruised through Gresham last weekend during the 2021 Gresham Lilac Run. Nearly 400 participants cruised along Gresham's trails last weekend as part of a fun run for a good cause.

The city of Gresham hosted its third annual Gresham Lilac Run, presented by Unitus Community Credit Union.

With COVID-19 precautions in place, hundreds of runners gathered in staggered heats on Saturday and Sunday, May 8-9, to complete 5k, 10k and half marathon courses that cruised along the Springwater Corridor Trail, the Saddle Butte Trail and the Butler Creek Trail.

In total, $13,000 in runner fees went directly toward supporting Family of Friends Mentoring, which connects local children across East Multnomah County with dedicated mentors.

Next year, the city will select the Lilac Run race beneficiary through an application process. Details on how to apply will be released later this summer.

In addition to those who gathered locally, athletes from around the world also laced up to join in the fun. The city said virtual participants took part in the Lilac Run from as far away as Norway, Kentucky, Illinois and five other states. About 60 people ran virtually.

The Lilac Run is funded through sponsors, without whom it would not be possible to put on the event. Unitus Community Credit Union has served as the presenting sponsor for the third year in a row. Bronze sponsors are Migration Brewing and Konell Construction & Demolition Corp. Other sponsors include Country Coffee Gresham, Marathon Printing, Inc., Tailor Johnson with NextHome NW Realty, Eastwind Running & Endurance, Cure Hydration, Bob's Red Mill, the Old Spaghetti Factory and US World Class Taekwando.

The 2022 Gresham Lilac Run is scheduled for Saturday, April 30. Registration will open later this fall.
