Christopher Kelly, 14, died while volunteering during tree planting at the dog park in the Sandy River Delta

PMG FILE PHOTO - A teenager died after a tree limb fell in Troutdales Thousand Acres Park. A 14-year-old teenager died last weekend after being struck by a fallen tree limb while volunteering at the dog park in the Sandy River Delta.

At 11:15 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 6, the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office deputies and medical responders were dispatched to the Troutdale National Scenic Area on reports of a teenager being injured by a limb about a quarter-mile from the Crown Point Highway.

The victim was Christopher Kelly, of Portland, who did not survive his injuries despite lifesaving efforts. Kelly was a freshman at Central Catholic High School.

"Our thoughts are with this young man's family during this tragic time," Undersheriff Nicole Morrisey O'Donnell said. "This weighs heavy on all of us in the first responder community."

Kelly was helping plant trees at the time of the accident.

It was not the only tree limb incident in the region over the weekend. Two people camping at Northeast Sandy and 118th in Portland had a "huge tree branch" fall on them, Portland Police reported. One person died and another was taken to the hospital.

Experts said the limbs are falling because of recent severe weather conditions, including last winter's ice storm and the summer's drought.
