Mt. Hood Mustangs and Fords Car Club hosts drive-through donation event for food pantry

PMG PHOTO: CHRISTOPHER KEIZUR - For the second year the Mt. Hood Mustangs and Fords Club had a drive-through donation for SnowCap Community Charities. A group of gearheads in Gresham stepped away from restoring classic rides and tinkering with engines to support a critical, local nonprofit food pantry's fundraiser that is dedicated to feeding the hungry across the region.

The Mt. Hood Mustangs and Fords Car Club Cruise-in ran from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 20, at Gresham's Office Depot, 2205 N.E. Burnside Rd. The club members showed off their cars as community members dropped off needed donations for SnowCap Community Charities annual Fill-A-Bag fundraiser.

The car club helped garner canned vegetables, peanut butter, canned soup, coffee, toothpaste, shampoo, deodorant, razors, baby wipes, hand sanitizer, dish soap, toilet paper, masks, hand warmers, hats and gloves, activity books, and pet food — all of which are critical donations during the cold months when community members across East Multnomah County find themselves most in need of support.

"This is a local fundraiser, and our club loves to work with nonprofits," said Carol Carns, activities director for the car club. "SnowCap is an important place for many people."

Hood Mustangs and Fords Club first joined the Fill-A-Bag efforts last year when the pandemic made in-person events difficult. That drive-through event will now be a reoccurring way for the Gresham-based club, which has 50 members, to make a difference.

The group also hosted an online donation event for Fill-A-Bag using SnowCap's buying power — $20 donated to the food pantry allows for the purchase of roughly 400 pounds of food. Via social media, the Mt. Hood Mustangs and Fords Club raised enough money for 6,600 pounds to be bought by SnowCap.

"It could be anyone who needs this kind of help," Carns said. "These donations allow someone local to have a meal."

SnowCap's annual Fill-A-Bag is a three-month fundraiser that brings together individuals and businesses across the community through a series of fun, creative events. Spearheaded by Gresham Ford, Riverview Community Bank, and Pamplin Media Group, the fundraiser helps keep the shelves stocked at the largest food pantry in East Multnomah County.
