Multnomah County Transportation has closed the upper section of Larch Mountain Road in the Columbia River Gorge for the winter season.

The roadway was shuttered at 9 a.m. Monday, Nov. 29, with the installation of a snow gate near milepost 10. The annual closure protects the public from the adverse weather conditions and reduces maintenance costs associated with snow removal. The gate is opened in the spring.

Larch Mountain Road is the highest road in Multnomah County, reaching an altitude of 4055 feet. The snow gate is at about 2300 feet.

Troutdale upgrades water meters

Folks across Troutdale are receiving new water meters as part of a city multi-year replacement program that should keep better track of usage.

The goal is to replace 500 water meters per year at infrequent intervals because of the low-priority nature of the project. That also means the city does not provide much advance notice of the replacement.

When your meter is replaced with a newer model, which takes about 30 minutes, the water is shut off to the home. There also could be air in the pipes or discoloration of the water during the initial use. The city recommends letting the tap run for two to three minutes to clear up any issues.

If problems persist, Troutdale residents should call the water personnel at 503-674-3300 or after hours — later than 3:30 p.m. an on weekends — 503-251-4136.

The advanced meter models should help the city and homeowners better pinpoint leaks or water loss.
