Ruiz won the Position 7 seat on the Reynolds School Board in 2017 and was re-elected in 2019. His resignation from the board will take effect Tuesday, Feb. 1.

In 2020 Ruiz was elected to represent Oregon House District 50, which covers Gresham and East Portland. He cites his new role as a state legislator as the reason for stepping down from his school board position.

"In 2017, as a 22-year-old, I got voted on to this position to serve our amazing Reynolds Students. Ever since then, I have learned so much about the public education system that made me simply just love advocating for public schools even more," said Ruiz on his twitter post. "As some of you know, I took on the role of State Representative and it has taken a lot of my time."
