Business owner Tom Meehan wanted to bring franchise into new market, connect with 'neighbors' and new pet owners

A new business owner in Gresham had a serendipitous beginning — it coincided perfectly with a boom in new pet owners needing advice on how to best care for their furry loved ones.

Tom Meehan and his wife, Julie, moved to the Gresham-area in 2020. Meehan had worked in retail for all of his 30-year career, and was looking to run his own business after being laid off at the beginning of the pandemic.

The couple are pet owners — they have one dog and three cats — and while living in Houston Meehan would shop at the local Pet Supplies Plus.

"I don't really like to go shopping despite being in retail my whole career," he said with a laugh. "But at Pet Supplies Plus it was always the best experience."

He loved the store's intuitive layout, how neat and clean everything was, and the modern designs. Plus the customer service was always top-notch. So he reached out to the third-largest U.S. pet supply company about becoming a franchisee and set his sights on Oregon.

Now Meehan is running Pet Supplies Plus at the Gresham Station Shopping Center, 1152 N.W. Civic Drive, alongside a talented and dedicated team. They are the only branch of the franchise in the Pacific Northwest.

"We have something for everyone," Meehan said. "We carry all the major brands, are competitive price wise, and will do all the little things to make your shopping visit better like carry large bags out to cars or give advice on food nutrition."

They have competitive prices, and will match other stores, and host community adoption or low-cost microchip events. And the core of the store is connecting with customers, which they refer to as neighbors.

"That is the best part, getting to know our neighbors and their pets," Meehan said. "We have some regulars who come in a couple of times each week, and it always brightens my day to see them."

That includes supporting all those new pet owners who adopted four-legged friends during the pandemic.

"For a lot of folks this is the first time they have owned a pet, so we get them set up with everything they need, from food and toys to equipment," Meehan said. "We are here to help them — not just sell products, but the right products so they keep coming back."
