Tany's Bakery, Coffee Shop support local students with backpack giveaway
The team behind Tany's Bakery and Tany's Coffee Shop are donating 300 backpacks to East County elementary students with a backpack giveaway at 5 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 11, at Fairview Elementary School, 225 Main St., Fairview.
The backpacks will be given out in a first-come, first-served basis while the supplies last. The backpacks will be filled with school supplies like glue sticks, colored pencils and other back-to-school necessities. Students do not need to attend Fairview Elementary School or the Reynolds School District to receive a backpack and supplies.
"We want to help and support our local kids," said Rudy Loeza, owner of Tany's Coffee Shop, "We want to give these kids a little motivation and help them feel good in the start of the school year."
Last year, the businesses held a similar event where they donated around 300 backpacks to local students.
"It is primarily for kindergarten to fifth grade kids," Loeza said. "I would say there will be seven or eight items of school supplies given out (along with the backpacks) ."
Although this year's backpack giveaway was fully funded by the businesses, Loeaza said he is looking for future partners to make this giveaway a yearly event and hopefully increase scale.
"It is hard to only give out just 300 backpacks because we have so many kids in the area who need the help," Loeza said. "It isn't enough, but I hope that it is a start."
The bakery and coffee shop partnered with the PlayEast! organization, Fairview Elementary School and Salish Ponds Elementary School.
