Al's Garden & Home gets national recognition; Morgan's Mattresses donates to homeless

Ed Chin named president of West Columbia Chamber

The West Columbia Gorge Chamber of Commerce has a new president.

Ed Chin, owner of All About Adventure Excursions, took the helm in July. His goals for the chamber are to connect businesses and community; be a voice for the business community, while supporting members small and large; and building relationships with surrounding cities to increase exposure of activities and events.

The West Columbia Gorge Chamber is a nonprofit organization that works to advance civic, industrial, commercial and general interests of the region. The group includes towns and unincorporated areas of Fairview, Wood Village, Troutdale, Springdale, Corbett, Bridal Veil and Cascade Locks. They also promote attractions like Multnomah Falls, the Vista House and Bonneville Dam.

Gresham Chamber hosts Friday networking events

The Gresham Area Chamber of Commerce hosts weekly networking events — known as Friday AM —at participating member businesses. The events are open to representatives of chamber members and visiting businesses.

The events are held from 7:20-9 a.m. each Friday throughout the year.

Ams are planned for these upcoming Fridays:

- Aug. 19: Visual Impressions Photography, 3650 S.E. Powell Valley Road.

Al's Garden & Home among top independent shops

A local garden and home store that focuses on high-quality plants and garden supplies received national recognition.

Al's Garden & Home, which has a location in Gresham, 7505 S.E. Hogan Rd., was highlighted in the July issue of Garden Center magazine as one of the top independent garden centers. Al's was ranked 24 on the best 100 list.

"We are very proud to be recognized by Garden Center magazine and be in the company of leaders in the industry," said Mark Bigej, COO of Al's Garden & Home. "It is very rewarding to have been in this business for nearly 75 years and continue to find success in serving our customers."

The Top 100 Independent Garden Center list was based on 2021 sales volume. Combined the companies earned revenue of more than $2 billion last year, with representatives from 38 states and five Canadian provinces.

"Our annual Top 100 List includes some of the most innovative and exciting companies in the independent garden center market," said Kate Spirgen, magazine editor.

Mattresses for the homeless

A local store is teaming up with the city of Gresham to provide free mattresses to homeless individuals seeking housing.

Morgan Miller, owner of Morgan's Mattresses, met with the city's Homeless Services Team while they were working with a homeless individual nearby his store. Miller offered to provide the person a free mattress, and extended the offer to any homeless individual housed by the city.
