Business owner Jolynne Milone says the best way to support is to visit their gift shop

Things are starting to look up for Jolynne "Jo" Milone, owner of Koya Kitchen, after her sushi bar food truck suffered a fire on Friday, Aug. 5. Hoodland Fire crews were on scene shortly after the fire erupted and said it was uncertain how the fire started but speculated that it was a wiring issue.

While the fire left the original cart a total loss, Milone posted on Monday, Aug. 22, that she has acquired a new truck and is in the process of getting it and her space at 67886 Highway 26 in Welches ready to welcome customers back for a meal.

"We are excited about all of the good food to come," she said, adding that she is aiming to reopen in mid- to late September.

For now, the best way for community members to support Koya Kitchen, Milone said, is to patronize the gift store that is located on the same site and still open from 1-6 p.m. Wednesday-Saturday. While the fire was unexpected and Milone was sad to see her cart go, she said "in some ways this was the worst time for this to happen and in some ways, the best."

Milone and her crew were already planning renovations for the business, and now "we're doing all the improvements we never have time to do this time of year."

Fortunately for Milone and her staff, she said, the business is well covered, and her staff remain employed and paid full-time. She also expressed appreciation and surprise at the community's response to the fire.

"The day of the fire so many people were contacting us and offering to do fundraisers for us," Milone said.

"We appreciate your support and patience," Milone added. "We're looking forward to putting out better food, safer. Koya is really going to be better than ever."
