After two-year hiatus, 40th annual event brings stuffed bears, thousands of visitors into downtown.

Folks set up chairs and blankets along the winding route along Miller, Main and Roberts hours before the start; coffee lines stretched out the door; dogs' tails wagged; and, of course, many kids tightly hugged their own stuffed bears they brought to enjoy the festivities.

"Today is such a great day," said Sue O'Halloran with a smile.

Hosted by the Soroptimist International of Gresham, the parade had business floats; classic cars; horses and dogs; Gresham and Barlow High School cheerleaders and the Gophers marching band; kids, parents and teachers from local preschools and elementary schools in the Gresham-Barlow, Reynolds, Corbett, and Centennial districts; taekwondo students; celebrities like parade founder Pat Fielder and Todd Kirnan, aka "Mr. Gresham;" Disney princesses; firetrucks and police motorcycles; and many, many bears of all shapes and sizes.

"A culmination of where we have come after years of a pandemic. I look down the street and see so many people together."

Though it was a slightly smaller outing in terms of entries — 65 groups of more than 1,500 participants — the anniversary felt like a breath of fresh air for the community after the parade was canceled two years straight during the pandemic.

"It is a really good feeling, there is overwhelming amounts of joy," said Peggy Johansen, a founding member of the Soroptimists and one of the main forces behind running the parade.

"When I look around during this event I realize how small and connected our town is," she added. "I see local businesses, schools, people — it all makes me smile and think, 'Gresham.'"
