Rockwood Market Hall nursery supplies plant lovers with reasonably priced greenery

Making his dream of owning a plant store a reality didn't come quick or easy. The long journey to his own business started nearly 20 years ago.

Garden problem

Jiranuwatana's 20 year obsession with plants started as a beef with his Homeowners Association. His HOA at the time launched a complaint, claiming Jiranuwatana's garden wasn't up to snuff with their standards.

"So, in spite, I tried to make the best-looking garden I could," Jiranuwatana said with a laugh. "In my eyes it turned out really nice, but I don't know what they ended up thinking about."

Since then, Jiranuwatana developed a deep love for plants. As his passion grew, so did his desire to want to open his own plant shop. Unfortunately, he couldn't give up his full-time job at the time. In 2019, Jiranuwatana took a bit of chance and started selling his plants at the Gresham Farmers Market and online on the side.

Opening the shop

When the COVID-19 pandemic got serious in 2020 his online sales all of sudden blew-up, which gave Jiranuwatana a perfect opportunity to capitalize on his success. "I saved a little money from that and then I decided my full-time job wasn't for me," Jiranuwatana said. "To find that happiness I was missing I came across this space and decided to open up the shop."

The Other Side Nursery officially opened its doors at the Rockwood Market Hall in March 2022. Jiranuwatana hopes the shop provides a place where folks can start their plant collection without hurting their wallets.

"I focus on making plants accessible to everyone," Jiranuwatana said. "That is why we are in this neighborhood and keep our prices within reason."

Jiranuwatana primarily sells small indoor plants as well as some plant supplies, art pieces and a wide selection of crystals. The crystals are curated by Jiranuwatana's partner Chris, who also sell them at local farmers markets. Jiranuwatana said as of now tropical and succulent plants take up most of the store's merchandise, but he hopes to offer more outdoor plants in the future.
